Battle Creek, Michigan illustrates many of the goals of Northwest Allen Trails in their Linear Park.  Their website has some great pictures and lots of details, starting with:

The Battle Creek Linear Park offers a beautiful and safe trail for walking, jogging, cycling, and skating. It joins many picturesque spots for fishing in the Battle Creek and Kalamazoo rivers, canoeing or a picnic. Over 17 miles of paved pathway winds through wooded areas, open fields, parks, and even some commercial areas. Marker posts along the way let you measure your progress in miles or kilometers and to set training goals. Historical, cultural and point of interest signs are also found along the way.

Hard to fish around here, but who knows?
