Greenway Consortium contributes to Trails

The Greenway Consortium is an all-volunteer organization founded 30 years ago by the late Ernest Williams to develop trails along the three rivers. As a result of Williams' and the Consortium efforts, the Rivergreenway was built along the St. Marys River from the water filtration plant to swinney Park, and from Foster Park to Tillman Park. Before that the first 3 miles of the Rivergreenway, from the water filtration plant to johnny Appleseed Park alon the St. Joseph River, were built in the mid-1970's during the administration of Mayor Ivan Lebamoff.

Create accessible greenway system

I love our greenways. They provide hours of comfortable recreation and allow us to stroll between our citys wonderful parks. But I would like to see them serve as more than siple a way to excercise in our free time. The city should make it a goal to establish new paths as alternative commuter routes. Honking at Bicyclists is scary, unnecessary

Terri Richardson's column, "Bike rides cut costs, pounds" (June 30) summed up what a few bicyclists in Fort Wayne already know: "Fort Wayne is not a bike-friendly city."
Sometimes biking along roads with no sidewalks, bikers have to try their best to stay as far over as they can to the side of the road. Yeat angry drivers still honk, yell or give rude hand gestures, just because they are apparently annoyed by having to slow down for one quick minute. State buys abandoned railroad line in county
Auburn - The State of Indiana is buying most of and abandoned railroad line running from north to south through the center of Dekalb County. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources said it plans to give the land to local goverments and not-for-profit groups for future trail expansions.
The DNR has agreed in principle with owners of the former Penn Central rail line to buy the abandoned railroad corridor, it said in a news release. Continue reading this article!

A Breath of Fresh Air: Park car and hoof it

A school-sign program instructing drivers not to idle and a TV ad promoting walking and bicycling are among the steps a local coalition is taking to improve air quality and meet stricter federal standards.
"No idling" signs will be erected at 20 local schools in three school districts - Southwest Allen County, Northwest Allen County and Fort Wayne Community Schools - in preparation for the coming school year. The aim is to reduce emissions and protect children from harmful fumes. Depending on the sign campaign's success, it could be extended to other schools. Continue reading this article!
